About Surrey Lions Clubs

Lions International was set up in 1917 by Chicago businessman Melvin Jones who believed that local business clubs should expand their horizons from purely professional concerns to the betterment of their communities and the world. In 2011 over 45,000 Lions clubs exist around the world with the same aims expressed 94 years ago.

Surrey’s nine Lions clubs, known as Zone 4b, have joined together to organise the Squadronaires playing at Dorking Halls to raise money for Help for Heroes and the Patients Welfare Fund at the local Headley Court rehabilitation complex.

The nine clubs are:

Individually, clubs organise events to raise money, most of which is put into the local community and the rest supporting national and international projects and appeals.

Most people join a Lions club to put something back into the community they live in. Often introduced to the Lions by a friend or after attending a Lions event, new members soon discover that beneath the hard work and banter lie lifelong friendships and camaraderie, which is why Lions clubs have members for decades and not just a few years.

Lions clubs thrive because they have members with a variety of skills and experiences across a wide age range. Members have different amounts of time available and pull together to improve their communities.
